No Coach Could Do What Chris Mack And The Refs Did Against Georgetown
Peel back the layers from Xavier basketball’s GUTSY performance against legendary Georgetown. What do you see?
The outer layers show, first and foremost show an exceptionally gutsy and competitive win. Then ONLY 8 turnovers and a huge five-point margin of victory over what some say could be the best and historically greatest team in the Big East. With John Thompson on the sideline, this would probably have been a Georgetown win.
Keep peeling. Arms flailing and should be foul causer Kaiser Gates – had only 4 points. Chris Mack made a bold move to keep Gates in the game. ‘Teers still won though. Beating a team whose only conference wins have been St. John’s would be viewed as meaningless to some. For Xavier, it was a hard fought win that showed how tough the Big East can actually be.
And more peeling. Reverse blue man group member JP Macura scored a mere 7 points and only turned the ball over 1 time. How about some more peeling? Xavier went to the line 41 times, Georgetown didn’t even go half as many times, a mere 17. Xavier played like they had 8 players on the court, Chris Mack’s tempo is just superior to everyone else.
That’s enough peeling. What you’re left with is No. 6 Xavier’s 96-91 win over historical Georgetown, one of the more interesting and impressive items on the 2017-18 team’s resume. Perhaps their best Big East win all season if you think about it. Not only did they beat Georgetown who has won a National Championship but they also beat Patrick Ewing, thus then Xavier is better than the Knicks.
It wasn’t always pretty, but with Xavier head coach Chris Mack relying on Trevon Blueitt and the refs to keep his team in the game, it got a little prettier. 41 trips to the stripe and some horrible play calling by Ewing sealed the deal for the ‘Teers.
Here are the biggest takeaways from No. 6 Xavier’s 21st win of the season:
• By my count, some 9 players saw playing time in Xavier’s win over should be ranked St. John’s, and that’s essentially a nightmare for any coach in America not named Christopher Mack.
Instead of griping and wasting the opportunity before it, Xavier put its hard hats on and went to work.
At the end of regulation, Trevon pulled the quick trigger down 4 and nailed the shot. That was only three though, FOUL. The refs bailed him out on a phantom call. A lot of those Saturday night at Cintas as Xavier extended their home winning streak. Cooking at home is always better than away and Xavier was eating good Saturday.
Forget Patrick Ewing is an all-time NBA great. If it wasn’t for Patrick being great this would be far worse. BUT WHAT THE FUCK WERE THOSE DRAWN UP PLAYS PATRICK?! YOU BIG UNEVENLY SHAPED MONGLOID OF A MAN. CHRIS MULLING DOESN’T EVEN DRAW PLAYS AND HIS KIDS BEAT DUKE. FUCKING DUKE. YOU COULDN’T BEAT A FUCKING DR. SUESS CHARACTER AND A KID WHO PLAYS WITH HIS DICK IN PUBLIC. WHAT THE FUCK, PATRICK?
Forget all of that and focus on the fact they play in the Big East. Essentially playing the ’27 Yankees week in and week out. When you think about it this way, this win is a huge statement for the ‘Teers.
“We have a really good team. Georgetown is a really really talented team. Might be the best Big East team we’ve played this year. Honestly, their record isn’t indicative of how good they are. 3-9 in the conference is impressive when you think about this being the best Big East since 1985. Unreal. Pat really brought his kids to play.” Xavier head coach Chris Mack said.
The starters combined for a bunch of points. Chris Mack gets his players to score points. He definitely didn’t rely on one player to save the team at the end of the day. Other coaches get their players to score points but Mack REALLY gets them to score points. Just point scorers scoring points better than any other team in the country.
Georgetown went from being unranked to unranked in the matter of a week. They’ll now remain unranked but that’s the anti-Big East media bias. The voters have made it very clear they have no respect for Xavier or any Big East team for that matter. My colleague Pat Brennan has told me this on countless occasions between chews of Zebra Stripe bubble he brings into the newsroom and chews like an adolescent horse. Everyone despises Pat for this.
This win has the appeal of winning at Wisconsin or the wins against Baylor, St. John’s, Marquette, and Cincinnati and the good loss to Villanova and Providence, but it’s right up there in terms of what it meant to the XU locker room.
• Of course, have to remember this is the best Big East Conference since 1985. Any of these Big East schools could be National Champs this year. Nova is #1, Xavier is #6, there isn’t a 25 point disparity between the two.
